RTU participates in project “Assistance in modernization of Curriculum in Kulob State University”

The World Bank funded project was launched in October 2019 together with Upsala University and Kulob State University in Tajikistan.

RTU participates in the project with it’s expertise in order to help in the modernisation process of Kulob State University’s laboratories and study process in general.

In January, 2020 project partner meeting was held in Kulob city,Tajikistan, where Head of the International Project Unit of RTU, Kārlis Valtiņš also took part as an expert from RTU. Services provided in the meeting consisted of consultations on curriculum development, laboratory modelling, international accreditation and teacher training. During the session, current situation in Tajik, Khatlon region and KulSU was elaborated for EU experts to better understand the local specifics in order to have adequate understanding about the curriculum development cycle, local legislation and higher education setting. Discussions about the new study programme in Biotechnologies were initiated and also a first draft model of laboratory was elaborated to facilitate all the learning and scientific needs.Session, dedicated to the main principles of bologna process (including ECTS, recognition, structure of the studies and study programmes), was held for three KulSU teachers that will potentially be teaching in the newly developed Biotechnology programme. Also examples from RTU were shown in the study programmes of Chemistry and engineering, transversal subjects where observed, biotech related subjects marked for review and overall structure of the study programme analysed.

In teacher training session expert from RTU introduced Tajik participants with the possible online courses at the COURSERA platform to obtain additional knowledge.

The project will run until April 2021 and by then all the project partners will be continuously working on the development and international accreditation of the new Biotechnology study program in Kulob State University.

Erasmus+ KA2 strategic partnership project called WeLearn

The project started on September 1st, 2019 and it is coordinated by Tampere University, Finland. Project consortium consists of total of 6 higher education institutions from Finland, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Turkey and Latvia.

WeLearn is about intercultural communication and neighbourness learning. Neighbourness is a concept of living and learning together. This includes the essential human virtues, such as being friendly, empathetic, helpful, compassionate and respectful. In EU, due to freedom of movement and exchange programs, university classes are increasingly diverse and it its very often, when learning environment and effective collaboration between students and teachers is affected by dialogue challenges due to this cultural and national differences.

WeLearn focuses on diversity and seeks to promote skills such as intercultural communication inboth face-to-face and online environment and to promote neighbourness in diverse university communities. The main goal of the project is topromote dialogue to foster neighbourness by developing a dialogue skills training tool kit and training different stakeholders.

During the next three years project partners will be working together to:
1) Promote dialogue within a diverse university learning environment
2) Support the use of social technologies and methods e.g. storytelling
3) Produce knowledge on aspects of pedagogical approaches and personality

The main function of RTU, as for technical university, will be developing the Culture test mobile application for project together with experts from the Faculty of E-Learning Technologies and Humanities. RTU has also decided that WeLearn courses will be distributed between the Faculty of E-Learning Technologies and Humanities and The Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management courses. As well RTU has received the honor to hold the final project conference in Riga. The International Projects Unit is determined to work hard to achieve the best outcomes during the whole project.

RTU Rector and the Ambassador of Italy in Latvia Discuss Opportunities for Future Cooperation

On 27 February, Rector of Riga Technical University (RTU), Academician Leonīds Ribickis, hosted an introductory visit for His Excellency Ambassador of the Italian Republic Mr Stefano Maria Taliani de Marchio. The aim of the visit was to discuss the current cooperation with higher education institutions in Italy and outline future development of this cooperation. In the successful implementation of the cooperation, both parties agreed that coordinated activities between RTU and Italian Embassy in Latvia are highly significant.

Delegation of Kumamoto University has paid a visit to RTU

On February, 5 the distinguished delegation of Kumamoto University, Japan, has paid a visit to Riga Technical University (RTU).

During the short visit, Executive and Vice President, Head of Headquarters for Admission and Education, Director of the College of Cross-Cultural and Multidisciplinary Studies Prof. Dr. Mikio Furushima, Vice-Director of the College of Cross-Cultural and Multidisciplinary Studies Prof. Dr. Ursula Helena Koike and Chief of the Student Support Department International Education Division Ms. Miyuki Miyayama had a fruitful dialogue with RTU Deputy Rector for International Academic Cooperation and Studies Prof. Dr. Igors Tipans, RTU International Cooperation Unit and Head of Short-Time Courses Ms. Natalja Muracova, as well as with Latvian Kendo Federation President Mr. Vladimirs Kindzulis.

Open Call to Latvian Government Scholarships

In accordance with bilateral agreements on co-operation in education and science concluded between Latvian government and a few countries Latvia offers scholarships to foreign students, researchers and teaching staff for studies, research and participation in summer schools in Latvian higher education institutions. The Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia has delegated the administration of the Latvian state scholarships to the State Education Development Agency (Valsts izglītības attīstības aģentūra – VIAA).

Orientation Day for Erasmus and exchange students

On 24 January, RTU International Cooperation and Foreign Students Department organized an Orientation Day with informative seminars for Erasmus and exchange students coming from all over the world for spring semester of the academic year 2019/2020.

During the Orientation Day, the exchange students were introduced to the university itself and were provided with the most important practical and academic information related to their mobility semester.

RTU and University of Strathclyde sign cooperation agreement of joint master study program

On December 11–13, representatives of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in UK – Reader in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Dr James Irvine and International Development Manager, Ms Jennifer Gazzard – visited RTU to sign cooperation agreement that provides implementation of joint master study program in the field of electronics and telecommunications.
