Annual Foreign Students Trip Around Latvia

RTU International Cooperation and Foreign Students department promotes foreign students interest about Latvian culture and traditions by organizing trips around Latvia. This year students had a chance to get acquainted with ancient bread baking traditions, taste some bread and bake sweet pretzels at the bakery “Lāči”, visit Jaunmoku castle and have some entertaining activities there as well as enjoy the beauty of blooming rhododendrons at the experimental breeding nursery „Babīte”. Looking forward to another trip next year!

      

  

Parliament delegation from Egypt visits Kipsala campus and meets RTU administration and Egyptian students

On 9 May 2018, RTU Deputy Rector of International Academic Cooperation and Studies, prof. Igors Tipans, welcomed a delegation of the Egypt-Latvia parliamentary friendship group from the Parliament of Egypt, Ambassador of Latvia to Egypt, Iveta Šulca, and the non-resident Ambassador of Egypt to Latvia, Alaa Hegazy. The delegation was introduced to RTU and its activities related to cooperation with higher education institutions in Egypt, as well as had the opportunity to meet with Egyptian full time and exchange students at RTU.

 

Japanese movie evening at International Cooperation Center of RTU

On April 19 RTU International Cooperation and Foreign Students department in cooperation with the the Embassy of Japan in Latvia organised a Japanese movie evening with a purpose to promote study possibilities in Japan and deliver an in-depth information regarding scholarships (for implementing both studies and research) provided by the Government of Japan. In addition the insight of current cooperation between RTU and the universities in Japan  was provided by the professor Mr Igors Tipans -Director of International Cooperation and Foreign Students Department. The event was attended by Latvian, Japanese and other foreign students of RTU.

 

 

ERASMUS+ KA2 PROJECT “EXTEND” Meeting in Saransk

From February 24th until March 4th 2018 a joint meeting was organized by Erasmus+ KA2 capacity building in higher education project “EXTEND” (Excellence in Engineering Education through Teacher Training and New Pedagogic Approaches in Russia and Tajikistan) consortium in Saransk, Russia, hosted by Ogarev Mordovia State University. Meeting was dedicated to the introduction of Russian and Tajik teachers to the innovative pedagogical approaches used in EU, namely Romanian, Portuguese and Latvian examples. Various training sessions were organized and carried out by Politehnica University of Bucharest, University of Minho and Riga Technical University. Main outcomes of the seminar are considered to be:

  • Finding similarities and differences between Russian and Tajik education systems;
  • mapping out the main documents used in higher education;
  • preparing nominated teachers for further training (Train The Trainer);
  • performing a needs analysis for EXTEND excellence centers that will be deployed;
  • finalizing a questionnaire design for student and teacher survey.

In addition to the overall activities, Riga Technical University staff met with various faculty members of Ogarev Mordovia State University, developed communication about future project proposals as well as met with students of Quality Management to discuss the project issues from a student’s point of view.

ERASMUS+ KA2 PROJECT “MEGA” Meeting in Bloemfontein

During a period of three days (10.04.2018 – 12.04.2018) Erasmus+ KA2 capacity building in higher education project “MEGA” (Building capacity by implementing mhGAP mobile intervention in SADC countries) consortium partners met for a working session in Bloemfontein, South Africa, hosted by University of the Free State. During the meeting, RTU was represented by a team of five people who addressed administrative, mobile application development-related and content-based issues of the project implementation. As the project is reaching its first milestones (functional framework of the mobile application, precise dissemination and quality measures, protocol for research in South Africa and Zambia), it was important to agree upon the next steps of the project as well as the roles and responsibilities of all partners. Meeting was attended by Turku University of Applied Sciences (Finland), HTW Hamburg (Germany), Riga Technical University (Latvia), University of Zambia (Zambia), Stellenbosch University (South Africa), University of the Free State (South Africa) and University of Cape Town (South Africa).

In addition to the scheduled working sessions, Riga Technical University team members visited local healthcare institutions and conducted expert interviews with a local psychiatrist, ICT staff and primary healthcare workers. These activities allowed to summarize and conceptualize the framework of the mental health mobile phone application to be developed within the project.

Conference and Exhibition APAIE 2018

From 25 – 28 March 2018 in Singapore, representatives from the Riga Technical University (RTU) took part in the annual Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) 2018 Conference and Exhibition. During the event, which was hosted by National University of Singapore and three co-hosting universities (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University, and Singapore University of Technology and Design), RTU met with representatives from partner and non-partner universities worldwide and explored opportunities for academic collaboration.

The APAIE conference is the key event for international partnerships for the Asia Pacific region. More than 2,000 recruitment professionals gathered in Singapore.

Next APAIE 2019 will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Open Call to Latvian Government Scholarships

In accordance with bilateral agreements on co-operation in education and science concluded between Latvian government and a few countries Latvia offers scholarships to foreign students, researchers and teaching staff for studies, research and participation in summer schools in Latvian higher education institutions (HEIs) in the 2018/2019 academic year. The Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia has delegated the administration of the Latvian state scholarships to the State Education Development Agency (Valsts izglītības attīstības aģentūra – VIAA).

ERASMUS+ KA2 PROJECT “TIC CRUZ DEL SUR”

RTU FSD International projects unit has succesfully initiated Erasmus+ KA2 Capacity Building in Higher Education project entitled TICRUZ “Use of ICT for integral management of internationalization in Latin America”.

The key objective of the TICRUZ consortium is to enhance capacity for international cooperation between universities in Latin America’s least developed regions and HEIs in EU countries, by facilitating transfer of knowledge and best practice in transparency and credit recognition. Furthermore it aims at promoting the exchange of knowhow and good practices among the partnership HEIs, thus creating IT’s tools in the management of mobility programmes as a part of a future internationalization strategy that may positively contribute to their development. This project will capitalize on the strengths of existing partnership, Erasmus Mundus CRUZ DEL SUR. It consists of 10 full member HEIs, targeting a total of 6 countries, 3 in Latin America: Honduras, Panama and Argentina; and 3 in Europe: Spain, Latvia and Portugal. Most of the Latin American HEIs (4 from 6) are situated in vulnerable areas (Less Developed Regions), into which the project intends to make a big impact.

1st consortium meeting took place in Murcia, Spain 28.11.2017. – 30.11.2017.

ERASMUS+ KA2 PROJECT “EXTEND”

RTU FSD International projects unit has succesfully initiated Erasmus+ KA2 Capacity Building in Higher Education project entitled EXTEND “Excellence in Engineering Education through Teacher Training and New Pedagogic Approaches in Russia and Tajikistan”. Project consortium consists of 11 higher education institutions coming from Latvia, Romania, Portugal, UK, Russia and Tajikistan.

During the period of 3 years, project consortium will be working together to solve three specific problems in Russia and Tajikistan higher education field:

1) Development of comprehensive model and descriptor of the competences needed for the university teacher within engineering disciplines.

2) Establishment of a network for centres of Excellence in Engineering Education (EXTEND centres), offering training courses, research and consultations in engineering disciplines in each Russian and Tajik partner university.

3) Development of suitable training program for PhD students and teachers in teaching engineering disciplines.

1st consortium meeting took place in Moscow 20.12.2017. – 21.12.2017.

The International Projects Unit of RTU participates in a newly approved Capacity Building project under the title MEGA.

The project preparation started on October 15th 2017 and it is coordinated by Turku University of Applied Sciences, Finland. The aim of Mega project is to upscale child and adolescent mental health services in southern Africa, including the Republic of South Africa and Zambia, by creating a mobile application for healthcare specialists. RTU, as the technical partner of the project, will hold the responsibility of developing the application. The project team will attend Mega kick-off meeting in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa, on November 21st, hosted by South African Society of Psychiatrists. The International Projects Unit is determined to achieve the best outcomes during the kick-of meeting to ensure a successful operation and outcome of the project.”
